Perfect! I was thinking 'cake', so many birthday's this time of year in our family. I was going through my grandmother's cookbooks again, looking for something good! I found this cake recipe tucked in the desserts section of one of her cookbooks.
Cake Recipe:
1 3/4 cups sifted cake flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/4 teaspoons soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup cocoa
1/2 cup soft shortening
1 cup milk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
Preheat oven to 350" Grease and flour a pair of 8 in pans or an oblong 13 x 9 1/2 by 2 in pan. Sift flour, sugar, soda, salt, and cocoa together in bowl. Add shortening and 2/3 cup milk. Beat 2 minutes with mixer on medium speed or 300 vigorous strokes by hand. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl constantly. Add rest of milk, eggs and vanilla. Beat 2 more minutes, scraping bowl frequently.
Pour into prepared pans. Bake 8 in layers 35-40 minutes: 9 1/2 in. layers 30-35 minutes; oblong 45-50 minutes.
Ok... the icing... ingredients listed as powdered sugar, melted dark chocolate, butter and cream. And you're on your own!
